About FERPA and You
When working in a school, you will often notice quiet conversations which sometimes come to a sudden end when you approach. You shouldn't be offended at this, nor should you try to include yourself in such conversations. Much of what goes on in a school is of a highly confidential nature, either because it revolves around sensitivie issues like contract negotiations, or because it involves student records.
Access to student records is regulated by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, usually known as FERPA. If you are not familiar with this law, you need to be. You can see
